UVA Health is pleased to announce a nationwide search for a dynamic physician-scientist and leader, with national stature, to serve as Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology. This is a remarkable opportunity to lead an exceptional Department within a world-class academic medical center.
Founded as a distinct Department in 1955, the University of Virginia’s Department of Anesthesiology has a mission to “facilitate comfort and healing for our patients through creative innovation and teamwork, with a focus on life-long scholarship, care for ourselves, our community and the world.” The Department is committed to delivering the highest quality anesthesia, pain management and critical care services to patients.
The Department of Anesthesiology and its faculty have a long tradition of collegiality and collaboration within the School of Medicine and across the university. The Department is comprised of over 90 full and part-time anesthesiologists, pain medicine physicians and/or intensivists. The Department’s faculty have served as leaders at UVA, the NIH, other governmental programs, and in multiple specialty societies. Critical to their success has been the Department’s emphasis on creating an environment in which everyone is afforded the opportunity to achieve their goals.
The Department of Anesthesiology has a long and deep commitment to advancing the understanding of perioperative, pain and critical care medicine. The Department is also fortunate enough to have labs leading advanced neuroscience research often in collaboration with other departments across the School of Medicine and the University. The Department has a significant history of successful translational and clinical research including NIH and other government agency funded projects, multi-site clinical trials, investigator-initiated research, and program projects. Most recently, the Department advanced 10 positions in the Blue Ridge Rankings – moving from number 37 out of 54 ranked programs to number 27.
The new Chair will be a dynamic, nationally recognized physician-scientist leader in anesthesiology, visionary and strategic, committed to best-in-class operational management. The Chair must be culturally intelligent, able to adapt to the institutional culture of UVA while able to articulate and implement culture change when necessary. They must have a track record of academic achievement and a commitment to discovery and innovation as well as the training of the next generation. They will be seen as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of the institution.
In this highly visible role, the new Chair will report to Dr. Melina Kibbe, Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Health Affairs Officer. A national search for a successor has now commenced and Korn Ferry is pleased to partner with the University of Virginia School of Medicine to identify the next Chair.
